Consumer Protection List

The National Consumer Agency has enforcement powers under the Consumer Protection Act 2007 and other consumer legislation.

The "Consumer Protection List" gives details of the actions taken by the NCA under the Act, and the current list covers the period since May 2007, when the NCA was established as a statutory body.

In total 62 actions were taken by the agency in the six months from July to December 2009.

The enforcement actions consist of:

  • 2 prosecutions - two traders were prosecuted and fined during this period. Read details...
  • 1 undertaking - one trader undertook to comply with the general prohibition on misleading commercial practices during this period. Read details...
  • 20 compliance notices were issued to 17 businesses during this time. Read details...
  • 39 fixed payment notices were issued to 37 traders during the period. Of these 32 were in contravention of the EC (Requirement to Indicate Product Prices) Regulations, 2002, four were in contravention of the Retail Price (Beverages in Licensed premises) Display Order, 1999 and one was in contravention of the Retail Price (Food in Catering Establishments) Display Order, 1984.
