5. Broadband
Broadband is an always-on internet connection that gives you high-speed access and downloads for a flat rate monthly charge.
In most cases, once you have broadband installed you simply pay a flat fee each month with no additional charges for the amount of time you spend online.
There are different ways of accessing the Internet using a broadband connection. Many broadband connections are made via an existing phone or internet provider.
This may be convenient, but it may not be the best deal. Other options include Wi-Fi and mobile broadband.
It is worth shopping around and finding out exactly what you get for your money and what best suits your needs.
The costs
Costs you should enquire about, depending on the service you choose:
- Is there a once-off installation fee?
- Possible download limit
- Possible line rental fee
Broadband providers may offer additional services such as TV or telephone service, so you may wish to consider the aggregate cost of these services.
If you are considering the combined cost of home phone and broadband you may wish to use the combined services calculator on the CallCosts.ie website.
A wide variety of products is available in the market, each using different technologies and offering different services to users. Read a list of broadband products available in Ireland.
The contract
When signing up to a broadband service you generally commit for a minimum contract period. It's important to check what the contractual commitment is before signing up.
Always check your existing contractual obligation before switching tariff plans or switching service providers, as penalties may apply if you exit your contract early.
You should also check with your operator what payment options are offered and if additional charges apply if, for instance, you want to pay by cash or want to receive a paper bill, and whether there are any discounts if you pay by direct debit.
