2. FAQs about Switching Mobile Phone Operators
If you do decide to switch your mobile phone contract to a new operator, the following are the most likely questions you may have...
Can I keep my old number?
Yes, thanks to "Mobile Number Portability" or MNP. This process helps consumers wanting to switch, because it gets rid of the cost of a number change.
Since your number stays the same, you won't have to tell friends and family a new number, or reprint cards or stationery. MNP is available to both pre-paid and post-paid customers.
Surely if I have my old number, people calling me won't know I'm now on a different network and it might cost them more to phone me?
Yes, if the network you use is no longer apparent by the prefix to your number (085/086/087).
So they may hear a short tone before the call is connected. This warns them that the call is "off-network" and could have a higher call charge.
So is it difficult to do?
No. Contact the new operator to set up a subscription and tell them you want to keep your old number.
You will have to give them certain information to validate your request and show you're entitled to transfer your number.
What does it cost?
There is no direct charge to move your number to a new operator. But you're still liable for any outstanding bills with your old one.
Check the terms and conditions of your old contract about closing your account.
How long does the switchover take?
Normally just a few hours.
