3. Switch and save on electricity and gas

It is now possible for consumers to switch electricity and gas suppliers and to potentially save money.

The Commission for Energy Regulation ensures that Eirgrid and Bord Gáis maintain the same level of service to all customers regardless of who they choose as their supplier.

This means that customers do not need to change any aspect of their meter, wiring or pipes in order to be supplied by a different company.

What's involved

For customers who wish to switch supplier the process is easy. The Commision for Energy Regulation on its energy customs website (www.energycustomers.ie) explains the switching process as follows:

Step 1

Know what you are looking for. Check your electricity bills and gas bills and see how many units you use over a year. For gas users, the AC Band on your bill will indicate your estimated annual consumption band.

Knowing your consumption will assist you in choosing a tariff. To switch electricity supplier you will need your meter point registration number, which is contained in any electricity bill.

Step 2

Make price comparisons using your actual data where possible.

Step 3

Make sure you are comparing like with like, as some tariffs may apply to different usage rates or different customer profiles. For example domestic and business tariffs will differ.

Step 4

Choose your new supplier. Read a full list of suppliers

Step 5

Check that the services on offer suit you. This is especially important for customers who may have special requirements regarding electricity and gas.

Step 6

Once you decide, contact the supplier directly to arrange the change over. Your new supplier will take care of all necessary arrangements.

Once your switch has taken place you will receive a letter from ESB Networks providing you with information on your connection to the electricity network.

This letter is for your information only and does not mean that any aspect of your electricity supply will change or that you need to find a new supplier.

Step 7

Read and understand the terms and conditions of your contract.

Remember that there is no obligation on customers to change supplier. You should only do so if you feel it is offers you good value.
