Price controls
We're all conscious of high prices. But generally speaking, Ireland has no price controls.
This means that we have no law in Ireland about what the maximum or the minimum price of any product or service should be.
This should mean that competition between shops and between service providers enables the consumer to buy at the best possible price. The onus is on you to 'shop around' to find those lower prices and the best value products and services.
It is not an offence for a trader to increase their prices to take advantage of seasonal demand or a particular occasion, as long as the prices quoted to consumers accurately reflect the higher price.
However, the price displayed should be the price charged. You are not automatically entitled to the product at the lower price if a higher price registers at the till.
As long as the seller informs you before he takes your money, you have the choice of walking away from the deal.
If you feel you have been overcharged you should complain to the shop and, if they do not deal with you satisfactorily, complain to the NCA on 1890 432 432 or (01) 402 5555.
