Car scrappage scheme runs until end of 2010
18 January 2009
The December 2009 Budget included a scrappage scheme worth €1,500 off new low-emissions cars when you scrap your car aged 10 years or older.
The scheme is open to cars scrapped on or after 10 December 2009. It will run until 31 December 2010 and will apply to all cars which are 10 or more years old from the date of first registration.
VRT relief of up to €1,500 is available when a new passenger car with CO2 emissions of not more than 140g/km (in other words tax Band A or B) is purchased and registered and your old car is scrapped.
Some conditions for the scrappage scheme include:
- Cars eligible for scrappage must have been registered to the owner for at least 18 months prior to scrappage
- They must either have a valid NCT certificate, or one that expired less than 90 days before being scrapped.
- The scheme is also available to cars having documentation to show they have been presented for and failed an NCT test within the previous six months.
- The car must have been insured for at least 12 of the 18 months prior to being scrapped. Scrappage must be carried out by an End of Life Vehicles (ELV) Authorised Treatment Facility, which will issue a Certificate of Destruction in respect of your car.
